A Look into World Wrestling Entertainment

Wrestling is a sport that is very popular in Japan. Wrestling is a form of combat sport involving grappling type techniques such as clinch fighting, throws and takedowns, pins and other grappling holds. Entertainment is the act of entertaining, agreeable occupation for the mind, diversion and amusement. When we have a mixture of these two, we get ‘Sports Entertainment’ or ‘Professional Wrestling’.

One of the most famous wrestling entertainment companies in the world is World Wrestling Entertainment, which is often referred to as WWE. In early 1963, the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) was founded by a boxing promoter named Roderick James "Jess" McMahon and a professional wrestler Joseph Raymond "Toots" Mondt. They put on shows in a building called the “Madison Square Garden” in New York. It was held on a monthly basis, but since there was a lack of television exposure, crowds began to decrease.

In March 1979, the WWWF was renamed the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). Later on, McMahon’s son, Vincent Kennedy "Vince" McMahon, took over the business. The first wrestler he hired was Hulk Hogan who had achieved popularity outside of wrestling for a movie that was very popular during that time. Currently, WWE is so popular that it has a net worth in billions and that number is still increasing.

We can describe the WWE in many ways, for example, it is like figure skating. What this means is that there needs to be at least two people to put on a show. WWE is like showbiz with athletes. Since professional wrestling is scripted, most people don’t realize that the performers also need to be in great shape. There is a huge physical and mental burden on the superstars to perform at a high level, twice a week.

In an interview by WWE, one of their biggest superstar, John Cena said, “My job is not to make you cheer for me, my job is for you to sit down and be entertained, and if you tell me to go to hell because you are having a great night, I have done my job.” Great wrestlers don’t hurt each other, but make the experience as realistic as possible.One of the largest events in sports entertainment is Wrestlemania.

WrestleMania is a major pay-per-view show that is marketed as the Super Bowl or World Cup of professional wrestling. Superstars and people behind the scenes work hard all year to make this day a successful one. Like any other sport, only the best get to compete on this day, so all the talents have to work hard to prove that they deserve to be on that grand stage. Tickets for this show are sold months in advance and they sell out in minutes.

WWE has many weekly shows like Raw, Smackdown, Main Event and others. Almost every week the shows sell out and with the superstars being so popular, merchandise also fly off the tables. WWE is not just about entertainment in the ring, they do a lot for the community as well. They hold a show called “Tribute to the Troops” once a year for the armed forces that serve their country by risking their lives for simple freedoms. WWE also partners with the Make-a-wish foundation, which grants wishes for sick little kids. They are also the co-founder of the ‘Be a Star’ campaign that encourages kids to stop bullying. Since the WWE is a global empire, they have the power to make differences in the world. So if you ever get the chance to watch wrestling, imagine it to be a movie or film and just enjoy the show that is being put on.

スポーツエンターテイメントのなかで最大のイベントのひとつは、レッスルマニアというものです。レッスルマニアはスーパーボウルやプロレスのワールドカップとして取引されている主要なペイパービューショーです。スーパースターである選手と舞台裏の人々はこの日の成功のために一年間はたらきます。ほかのスポーツと同様に、たった一人が勝ち残るので全ての選手はグランドステージに進めるように努力する必要があります。このショーのチケットは数ヶ月前から販売されますが数分で完売します。
