Potential Of Skateboard
Nowadays a lot of companies contribute to society in various ways, for example, fund-raising activity and volunteer activity. With these activities, they support those who are suffering from poverty. Levi’s, a well-known jeans company, also does social contribution; however, what differs from other companies is its approach. It wants people all over the world to know how fun skateboarding is and engages in an activity that helps improve communities through skateboard.
Levi’s started a skateboarding jeans line in 2013 and began to help build skateparks by financial supports and gather volunteer builders. It does not matter if the place is in a developing country or not. It only helps for the person who would like to develop the community through skateboards. The important thing is that he or she has a passion to support community through building skatepark and wanted to keep it up. The first place where a skatepark was built was Bangalore, India.
The building crew of Germany was meant to build a skatepark in India for Holy Stoked, the skate team of India. Although the plan of building was going to be cheap and easy at first, due to the support of Levi’s, this project became bigger. Before it was built, there was only one skatepark in India and skateboarders have to pay a fee to use it. You can hardly find street skate spots, so free public skatepark that everyone can skate was needed.
Another purpose of this project was to improve their English education. Children can take free skateboarding lessons, if they took the English lesson this project provides. 34 people from 7 different countries gathered and constructed the skatepark in about two weeks.
Last spring, Levi’s built a skatepark in Bolivia. The project is begun from Milton Arellano’s words. He is the member of association de Skateboard de La Paz. It is a skateboard group in La Paz and encouraging skateboard community there. He said that he wanted Bolivian teenagers who are addicted to alcohol and drug to learn importance of forming the identity and DIY ethic and be a person who can contribute to society actively. He also said that the place where those children can skate for free and learn new tricks is necessary.
近頃、多くの企業は募金活動やボランティア活動など様々な方法で社会貢献を行っており、これらの活動で貧困に苦しんでいる人々を支援している。有名なジーンズを販売する企業であるリーバイスも社会貢献活動をしているが、他の企業とはアプローチの仕方が変わっている。世界中の人々にスケートボードの楽しさを知ってもらいたく、スケートボードを通じてその地域のコミュニティを改善する活動を行っているのだ。
リーバイスは2013年にスケートボードラインを始め、資金援助やボランティアの建設者を募り、スケートパークの建設のサポートをし始めた。その国が発展途上国であるかそうでないかは関係なく、彼らはスケートボードを通じて地域を発展させたいという想いをもった人の手助けをしている。重要なことはその人がスケートパークを建設することでそのコミュニティを発展させ、スケートパークを維持していきたいという熱意をもっていることだ。リーバイス初のスケートパーク建設地はインドのバンガローだった。
当初、ドイツの建設チームはインドのスケートチームであるHoly Stoked のためにスケートパークをつくるつもりで、当初の計画では簡素で小さいものであった。しかしリーバイスの協力のおかげで計画は大きなものとなる。彼らによるスケートパーク建設前はインドにはスケートパークが一つしかなく、使用するにはお金を払わなければならなかった。またインドにはストリートスケートスポットがほとんどないので、無料の公共スケートパークが求められていた。
この計画のもう１つの目的はインドにおける英語教育の改善だった。彼らが提供する英語の授業を受けることで子供達は無料のスケートボードのレッスンを受けることができる。7カ国から34人が集まり、スケートパーク完成までに2週間を要した。
昨春、リーバイスはボリビアにスケートパークを建設した。このプロジェクトはミルトン・アレラノ氏の言葉から始まる。彼はボリビアのスケートシーンを支えているassociation de La Pazというボリビアのスケートボード団体のメンバーの一員で、アルコールやドラッグ中毒になってしまっているボリビアのティーンエイジャーに自己形成の大切さとDIY精神を学び、社会に貢献できる人材となって欲しかった。またスケートボードを無料ででき、新しいトリックを学ぶことのできる場所が必要であると述べた。
Then Levi’s skateboarding decided to build a skatepark with skateboarding NPO “Make Life Skate Life.” Over 100 people from various countries took part in this project including professional skateboarders such as David Gravette and Joey Pepper. There was no definite design for the skatepark and they could build as they want. If they did not have the same vision, it would not work but they did a builder’s jam, which is like a meeting of builders, so they could build a wonderful skatepark.
Levi’s does not only build a skatepark, but also supports their skateboarding. With help of The Berrics, it runs a skatepark and website, it held #supportskateboarding event. It was done at the 10 skateshops of the United States like Homage Brooklyn and Uprise Skateshop. At these shops, skateboarders could donate their skateboards or skateboard’s parts which they used to use. Then these skateboards were sent to Bolivia and what was collected during this event are reused at Bolivia.
Levi’s Skateboarding has been helping build a skatepark in Oakland. Keith “K-Dub” Williams, an artist and teacher of Oakland, had a passion to build a safe and permanent skatepark. Levi’s knew his enthusiasm and decided to help him. There are two phases for this project. Phase one was to rebuild the skatepark and it finished this autumn. At phase two, they will collect feedback of local skateboarders and improve the skatepark in 2015.
There are different kinds of approaches to involve in society like this. By expanding social contribution as Levi’s is doing, more and more people are interested in it and the number of contributors will increase. Levi’s will do other projects related to skateboard in 2015, so you should keep an eye on its activity.
そこで、リーバイスはスケートボードに関わるNPO法人であるMake Life Skate Lifeとともにスケートパークを建設することを決定する。David GravetteやJoey Pepperなどの有名なプロスケートボーダーを含む100人以上の様々な国の人々がこのプロジェクトに参加することとなった。スケートパークを建設するにあたって明確なデザインはなく、それぞれが好きなように建てることのできるものだった。もし彼らが同じビジョンを共有していなければこの建設計画は上手くいかないが、ミーティングのようなセッションを事前に行っていたため、素晴らしいスケートパークを作ることができた。
ボリビアに対して行った活動はスケートパークを建設しただけではない。スケートパークとウェブサイトを運営するThe Berricsと共同して#supportskateboardingという現地のスケートボードのギアの援助を目的としたチャリティキャンペーンも行った。このキャンペーンはアメリカのHomage BrooklynやUpriseといった10つのスケートショップで開催され、使わなくなったスケートボードやそのパーツを訪れる人がそれらの店で寄付することができるというものであった。そして集められたものはボリビアに送られ、現地の人々に再利用されるという仕組みだ。
今、リーバイスはアメリカのオークランドのスケートパークの建設を支援している。オークランドでアーティスト・教師として活動しているKeith “K-Dub” Williamsは安全で恒久的に利用できるスケートパークの建設に対して熱意をもっていて、それを知ったリーバイスは彼を支援することにした。このプロジェクトには２つのフェーズがあり、スケートパークを再建築するフェーズ１は昨秋に完了した。2015年に行われるフェーズ２ではそのスケートパーク建設後のフィードバックを集め、改良を加える予定だ。
このように、社会に貢献する手段は多種多様であり一様ではない。リーバイスのような活動が広がっていくことでより多くの人々が社会貢献に興味をもっていくだろう。2015年にリーバイスはスケートボードに関わる活動を幅広く展開していくと思うので彼らの行動にぜひとも注目していただきたい。
