This is Halloween!!

The wonder and fantasy of Halloween brings excitements to people every year on the October 31st. The origin of Halloween is said to come from the Northern Ireland by the Celts. Now, it is considered as a big event of the United States. Just around the time when the leaves start to color and fall, people decorate their homes and dress themselves in various unique costumes of all shapes and sizes.

The custom of Halloween is slowly, yet steadily spreading in Japan as well. Nowadays there are more and more Halloween parties and this year in Kawasaki, there was a Halloween parade. This surprise was also held in one of the classes at the Aoyama Gakuin University. Mrs. Nakasone, the English teacher who planned the party for her students says, "There are many events and festivals in Japan. New Year’s Day is the most famous, yet many customs are flowing into Japan. Halloween is just like the Japanese O-Bon. We should enjoy many events equally".

While Halloween is considered to be a special event for children in America, even Japanese adults go into costumes. Another interesting fact is that there are no "Trick or Treat" in Japan. To children, collecting candies are the main idea but since the biggest Halloween population in Japan are grown-ups, dressing up in costumes are more popular and famous. "Halloween is great because of the costumes" says a student from one of the English class. "The girls wear amazing costumes and they are very cute."

Japan is a unique country filled with all kinds of cultures. It allows people to join and experience foreign cultures without going abroad. Why not enjoy the annual spooky atmosphere? One of the most famous festivals in the world is open to anyone.

ハロウィンに何かしましたか。今年の10月29日、渋谷の代官山にて青学生限定のハロウィンパーティーが開催されました。参加者は60名以上で、各々が自分で選んだコスチュームを身に纏い、自由に仮装を楽しみました。このパーティーを企画したのは英米文学科2年、Jeff Ho、 Cory Shibata,、Clifford Iwamoto、Rina Diennです。このパーティーのコンセプトは、外国人、帰国子女、ハーフ、日本人の友達を作ったり、学部外の人とコミュニケーションをとったりすることです。青学生同士の絆をもっと深めたい、大学生活を楽しくしたい、という思いでパーティーを開催することを決めました。青学生だけがパーティーに招待されたので、生徒は安心して参加することができました。主催者はビラを配布したり、FacebookやTwitterで呼びかけを行ったりして生徒を集めました。多くの生徒を集めることはとても大変だったということです。しかしパーティーは大成功でした。

パーティーで参加者は、おしゃべりをしながらスナックやドリンクを食べたり、音楽に合わせて自由にダンスをしたり、自分のコスチューム姿が写ったチェキがプレゼントされました。また、ベストコスチュームには美顔器、LUSH製品、スターバックスのカードなど多くの特別賞がありました。パーティー後、主催者の一人は「予想以上に人が集まってくれた。どうなるか分からなかったけど、成功してよかった。」と笑顔で嬉しそうに話していました。

彼らは、12月17日にも大学生限定のクリスマスパーティーを企画しています。「今後は留学生をたくさん呼び、青学の日本人生徒にネイティブと英語を話す機会を作りたい。楽しいけれどしっかりしたパーティーにして、青学生と留学生の交流の架け橋になりたい。」とすでにクリスマスパーティーへの期待が高まっています。 このクリスマスパーティーに興味を持った人はチェックしてみて下さい。Twitter:@aogakupartyFacebookへ行き、参加のボタンを押すことができます。
