The Girl’s New Icon, Ai

“Please give her some applause.”

　　　The audience began to give shouts of joy. The pretty woman, who was shaking her hand while walking on the stage, was Ai Takahashi. The 31st of October was the first day of 2014 Aoyama Festival, and she held a talk show at Aoyama Gakuin's Memorial Hall. The hall which can hold up to maximum capacity of 560 people was nearly full. It was possible to have a glimpse of her personality through the talk show following with an interview after that.

　　　Ai Takahashi was the leader of Morning Musume. After she left the group, she has succeeded in various fields such as musicals and movies. She appeared on stage of “Anne of Green Gables” as “Anne” in 2013 and 2014, and also in September, 2014, she made a debut in the movie, “Karaage USA” as the leading actor. Furthermore, she has been paid great attention as a fashion model. Her popularity among young women is growing and it is amazing that her “WEAR” account is followed by more than one million people. Recently, she married the comedian, Koji Abe, and her newly-married life and her daily fashion are receiving great support from young women, who admire her and often get the same fashion items she wears.

The audience was mainly women; however, regardless of age and sex, a great variety of people were there from the old fans since she was in Morning Musume, to those who became interested in her fashion which can be seen these days in “WEAR.” Some fans shook their yellow pen lights because yellow was her theme color in Morning Musume. Both students from our university and outside visitors gathered, and the crowd was very excited as if the talk show had been the fan meeting of her. Ai Takahashi was in a black dress of “2%TOKYO” and smiled, pointing at her black socks with pretty Halloween design, then she said, “I put Halloween’s flavors in today’s coordination.”

　　　During the talk show, she showed the audience her various aspects such as her cheerful character with cute smiles, honesty and seriousness about her job, and sometimes she made jokes entertaining the participants. For the question, “What is your image about Aoyama Gakuin University’s students?,” she answered happily, “Everyone is very fashionable. Also the buildings are beautiful and I have always wanted to come in here.” In spite of her popularity among young women, she had a complex about her short stature and said, “I am always thinking about balancing the clothes to fit my height.” What is more, she told that though she had begun to start “WEAR” as business for the first time, now, it plays an useful role for her as she said, “It remains me what clothes I have and I can sort out my collections. It is very convenient .”

　　　She joined Morning Musume in 2001 through the fifth generation auditions and had a brilliant career as a top idol for ten years. Responding to a question from the audience, “What was the most difficult thing to deal with in her career?,” she looked back past days and said, “Before I became a member, Morning Musume looked just shining for me but I realized that all members sweated blood in fact. Soon after joining the group, I was often scolded by seniors and teachers of singing and dancing; however now I think I am happy to get scolded in those days.” On the other hand, she answered the best thing for ten years was meeting other fifth generation members. She was selected out of 25,000 applicants, moved from Fukui to Tokyo , met three other new members and shared the same hardships with them. “They are really my dearest friends. I still keep in touch with them.” She told us with her pretty smile.

　　　She gave us messages to our students, “Sometimes it is quite hard to make your dreams come true. I also could not fulfill my dreams several times. I want you to just accept it as failure and never give up keeping your hope.” She told her thoug

ht that you should work hard toward your dreams.” She has a key when she makes efforts to achieve her dream. That is making her dream public. It could be embarrassing and difficult to come out your dreams and aims, but if you did, you would be spontaneously aware of them. This is her distinctive way of thinking created by her more than ten years’ long career. She has announced her big dream, acting in a Hollywood movie, to the participants around her and that increases her motivation.

　　　During the Q&A at the end of her talk show, she answered questions talking to her fans who cried for joy like “Are you alright?” with a smile. Her caring attitude that she sometimes stands to listen to their questions carefully and proposed rock-paper-scissors to decide the questioner fairly was very striking. After this event, because of her companionable and careful character, one of the audience said, “I think she made me like her even more.” She continued that “Her words, never give up keeping your hope, encouraged me and I thought that I would do my best without giving up too.”

　　　After her graduation from Morning Musume, she has been continuously drawing attentions from girls as their new icon. The reason why many people have been captivated by her, might not be merely her charming smile, but her hearty personality seen by a number of people during the talk show and her strength charging ahead toward her dream. The hall was warmed up with her homelike atmosphere but the event finished with loud applause while many people reluctant to part from her. She would attract further attentions flourishing in various fields and gaining popularity more and more.

次の瞬間、観客席から歓声が上がった。少し照れくさそうに手を振りながら舞台上を歩いて来るのは、高橋愛さんだ。２０１４年１０月３１日、午後３時、秋晴れの青山祭初日、ガウチャー記念礼拝堂にて、彼女のトークショーが行われたのだ。トークショーや、その後行われたインタビューでは、彼女の素敵な素顔を垣間見ることができた。

　高橋さんは元モーニング娘。のリーダーであり同グループ卒業後は、２０１３年、２０１４年と舞台『赤毛のアン』で主役のアンを演じ、２０１４年９月より公開された映画『カラアゲUSA』では映画初主演を果たし、舞台や映画での女優として、またモデルとしてなど幅広く活躍している。私生活では舞台共演をきっかけに知り合ったお笑いタレントあべこうじと、２０１４年に結婚し、そのライフスタイルやファッションセンスは多くの若い女性に支持されている。人気ファッションアプリ『WEAR』では自身のアカウントのフォロワー数が１００万人を達成したことが話題となり、今や若者のファッションリーダーになりつつある彼女を真似して同じアイテムを買う大学生も少なくない。

　５６０人ほどのキャパシティーをもつ会場はほぼ満席状態で、参加者は特に女性ファンが多かったが、老若男女問わず昔からのファンであるという人はもちろん、『WEAR』などで彼女のファッションが大好きになったという人も多く、その理由は様々である。モーニング娘。時代の彼女のテーマカラーだった黄色のペンライトやコスチュームなど、思い思いのグッズを持参し声援を送るファンの姿も多かった。中には学内の学生だけでなく、彼女の出演を知り学外からも人々が駆けつけ、その雰囲気はファンミーティングさながらである。「2%TOKYO」の黒いワンピースを身にまとった彼女は、ハロウィンモチーフがちりばめられたソックスを指して「ハロウィンを意識してみました。」と笑顔を見せた。講演会中も終始笑顔で、司会者の質問に丁寧に答え、時には真剣な表情で、また時には冗談で観客を楽しませた。「青学生のイメージは？」という質問には、「おしゃれなイメージ、学内も綺麗で、一度は入ってみたかったんです。」と喜びの表情を浮かべた。また、自身のファッションについては「背が低いのがコンプレックスで、どう着ればバランスよく見えるかを常に意識しています。」と知られざるこだわりについても触れ、「『WEAR』を始めたきっかけはお仕事でしたが、今は自分がどんな服を持っているのか整理できるのでとっても便利です。」と人気アプリ『WEAR』についても話した。

　高橋さんはモーニング娘。に第5期メンバーとして加入し、約10年間トップアイドルとしてその道を駆け抜けた。その中で最も大変だった出来事は何だったか、という参加者からの質問に対し、「加入前、モーニング娘。はキラキラしているイメージだったけど、ふたを開けてみたらメンバーみんな汗水流して努力をしている。加入直後は先輩やダンス、歌の先生に怒られることも多かったけど、怒ってもらえて本当に良かったと、今は思えます。」と当時を振り返った。逆にその10年間で良かった事として、メンバー、同期に出会えたことと答えた。日本中の約2万5千人の応募者の中から選ばれた同期の3人に、福井から上京して出会い、苦労を共にし、成長してきた。「同期は本当にかけがえの無い仲間。今でもよく連絡を取り合っています。」と笑顔で話した。

青学生へのメッセージとしては、「夢をかなえるのは難しいこともあると思います。自分自身、叶わなかったことも多い。挫折は挫折として受け止めて、でもそれでもやっぱり諦めずに夢を持ち続けて欲しいです。」と、自分のやりたいことに向かって頑張って欲しいという思いを語った。また、夢に向かって努力したい時に、彼女なりに意識していることがある。それは目標を口に出して公表することである。自分の夢や目標を口に出すことは恥ずかしかったりして難しいことがあるが、口にすることで自分の意識が自然とそこに向かうようになる、といった10年以上のキャリアを持つ高橋さんならではの考え方である。そんな彼女自身も、ハリウッド映画に出る、という大きな夢を持っていて、実際にその夢を周りに公表することで彼女のモチベーションを高めている。

　講演会最後の質疑応答の時には、感激のあまり泣き出してしまうファンに対して「だいじょうぶ？」「ありがとう」など声をかけながら笑顔で質問に答えた。時には席を立って声に耳を傾けたり、質問者を決めるために自らジャンケンを指揮したりと、その思いやりに溢れた行動が印象的であった。トークショー終了後、この丁寧で気さくな人柄に、ある参加者の方は、「ますます愛ちゃんが大好きになりました。」と話していた。また「諦めないで夢を持ち続ける、という言葉に背中を押されて、これから頑張っていこうと思いました。」と前向きな気持ちになったそうだ。

　モーニング娘。を卒業した後も、様々な活動を通して若い女性の新たなアイコンとしても注目を集めている高橋さんだが、多くの人が彼女に魅了されている理由というのは、彼女のチャーミングな笑顔だけではなく、講演会で垣間見えた彼女の思いやりのあり、誠実な人間性、そして夢に向かって突き進んでいる彼女の芯の強さであろう。彼女のアットホームな雰囲気に包まれた会場で多くの参加者に惜しまれつつ、大きな拍手と共に講演会は終了した。今後とも多方面で活躍し、ますますその人気を集めるであろう彼女に注目したい。
