Porco Rosso

“A pig who doesn’t fly is just an ordinary pig.”

The story is set in the Adriatic in Italy, after world financial panic. The hero is Marco Pagotto, known as, “Porco Rosso” which means crimson pig. He is a former air force man of Italy and a bounty hunter of sky pirates. His flying boat was badly damaged by Mr. Curtis, who was hired by the band of sky pirates that has been his enemy for a long time, so, on his way to Milan, he went to familiar Piccolo S.P.A. to repair it, and then there he met Fio, seventeen years old. And next to the confrontation with Curtis…

This movie was made for showing in the plane of Japan aviation at first. However, it became a long film and was remade to theater work. The story’s stage is Italy that became a victorious nation during World War I, but Italy couldn’t get any profit, and after the Depression, the life of people became a standstill.

The highlight of this movie is a grown-up love with Gina, flying depiction, and “cool” Marco shows. First, Gina was the same member of Marco’s flying boat club in his youth, and has been friends since then, and the idol charmed all flying boat pilots in Adriatic Sea. It is said that “All flying boat pilots in Adriatic Sea will fall in love with Gina once,” and she is also an extraordinary singer. She decides that she’ll love Marco next time if she wins a certain bet. That love game and the calm create the charm of adult’s love that is not in the love of the youth ones. And the flying depiction is one of techniques which Hayao Miyazaki is good at. He, who loves planes very much, always studies the picture of planes, and this completes dynamic, uplifting feeling and fantastic pictures with depiction of wind and water. Moreover, as this movie’s catchphrase “This is what I call cool.” says, the way of his living, the way of his loving which puts lover’s safety before even if he ignores his own feeling, and his belief that it is not war and so he does not kill anyone, these make people think that this is what you call cool. 時代は世界恐慌後、舞台はイタリアのアドリアーノ。元イタリア空軍で空賊狩りの賞金稼ぎであるマルコ・パゴットこと「ポルコ・ロッソ」（紅の豚）が主人公だ。長年敵対していた空賊連合が雇ったアメリカのカーチスに、ミラノへの道中飛行艇を大破され、馴染みのピッコロ社に修理に向かい、そこで１７歳のフィオと出会う。そしてカーチスとの対決へ…

もともとは日本航空の機内上映用として制作された。しかし長編化してしまったため劇場作品となったのだ。作品の舞台の時代は、第一次世界大戦で戦勝国となったイタリアだったが利益は何もなく、その後の世界恐慌により国民生活は破綻寸前である時代だ。

この映画の見どころは、マダム・ジーナとの大人の恋愛、宮崎駿の飛行描写、そしてマルコが表す“かっこよさ”だ。まず、ジーナは若き頃マルコの飛行艇クラブの同じメンバーでかつ幼馴染、アドリア海の全ての飛行艇乗りを魅了するマドンナだ。「アドリア海の飛行艇乗りは、みんなジーナに一度は恋をする」と言われており、歌い手としても非凡だ。彼女は“ある賭け”で勝ったらマルコを今度こそ愛そうと決めている。その駆け引きや落ち着きが、若者にはない、大人的な恋愛の魅力を醸し出している。そして飛行描写は、宮崎駿の得意とする技術の一つで、飛行機をこよなく愛する彼は常日頃飛行機の絵を研究しており、それがこれもまた得意とする風、水の描写とともに躍動的な素晴らしい映像を作りあげている。 そしてこの映画のキャッチフレーズでもある「かっこいいとは、こういうことさ」の文句の通り、マルコの生き方、自分の気持ちを殺してでも相手の安全を優先するという愛し方、戦争じゃないから殺しはしないなどという信念などを見ていると思わず、かっこいいとはこういうことか、とうなずけられる。それがどういうものかは、ぜひご自分でご覧になって感じていただきたい。
