The Place I Belong To Tells Me

“Country road take me home to the place I belong.♪” The story starts from the night view of Seiseki-Sakuragaoka, Tokyo with the song “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by Olivia Newton-John. This 70’s song has become a synonym for the Ghibli movie “Whisper of the Heart.” “Take Me Home, Country Roads” is written by John Denver in 1971. He is a famous folk singer in America, rewrote this song lyrics over and over. In “Whisper of the Heart,” Shizuku Tukishima, who is the heroine of this film, interpreted the lyrics from English into Japanese to present to her inferior companions of the chorus club. Then she wrote over again and again. The lyrics bothered her and she thought “what is the hometown for us?”

After producing the movie “Pom Poko,” which is the story of the raccoon’s revenge to the human race that steals raccoon habitat, Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli staffs thought about the meaning of home. Original comic of “Whisper of the Heart” made by Aoi Hiiragi, did not have the scenes of the appearance of “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” However, this song was incorporated in the animation movie by Hayao Miyazaki to make the audience think what the hometown is.

By thinking about her hometown, Shizuku wrote “Concrete roads.” Her hometown is Tokyo Metropolitan, called the concrete jangle. The lyrics followed; “Concrete roads Everywhere I go Covering West Tokyo Chopped down forests Buried our valleys My hometown's Down concrete roads.♪”

In the early stages of the film, Seizi Amasawa who is the other protagonist found out the paper of “Concrete roads” and said disagreeable things “I assume it is unlikely to sing the lyrics.” However, in the second half of the film, Seizi told Shizuku his fondness for “Concrete roads.” Seizi is chasing his dream about the violin engineer and desiring to study the assembly of the violin parts in Italy. Because of his decision to leave his hometown, by thinking deeply, Seizi might have got nostalgic for the place “the concrete jangle” he belongs to.

耳をすませば、私の故郷がこたえてくれる

「カントリーロード　僕を連れていってよ　僕が育ったあの場所へ」物語は東京・聖蹟桜ヶ丘の夜景とオリビアニュートンジョンの歌うカントリーロードから始まる。この７０年代ソングこそがジブリ映画『耳をすませば』の代名詞だ。カントリーロードは１９７１年にアメリカのフォークシンガー・ジョンデンバーによって制作する際、何度も何度も詞を書き直され生まれた。『耳をすませば』でも、ヒロイン月島雫は合唱部の後輩へのプレゼントとしてカントリーソングを日本語訳しようと試みて何度も書き直している。彼女は歌詞について故郷ってなんだろうと悩む。

『平成狸合戦ぽんぽこ』という狸たちが自分たちの住む場所を奪う人類に対して対抗する話を書き終えて、宮崎駿やジブリスタッフも同じように故郷とは何か考えていた。柊あおい原作の『耳をすませば』ではカントリーロードが登場しない。しかし、宮崎駿はこの曲をアニメに入れることで観客に故郷とは何かを考えてもらいたかったのだ。

自らの故郷とは何か考え、月島雫はコンクリートロードをつくる。彼女の故郷はコンクリートジャングルと呼ばれている東京だ。コンクリートロードの歌詞は以下の通りだ。「カントリーロード　どこまでも　森を切り　谷を埋め　ウエスト東京　マウント多摩　故郷はコンクリートロード」

物語の序盤、もうひとりの主人公・天沢聖治はコンクリートロードの歌詞を見つけ、嫌味を言う「コンクリートロードはやめた方がいいと思うよ」だが、物語後半で彼は雫にコンクリートロードも好きであると伝える。聖治はヴァイオリン職人という夢を追い、ヴァイオリン作りの勉強をイタリアでしたいと熱望している。 彼は故郷を出る決意から、よく考え、生まれ育ったコンクリートジャングルに懐郷の情がうまれたのかもしれない。
