“The Wind Rises” is set in Japan in the times of surging waves. After W.W.I, a reaction against economic conditions, the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, Great Depression of 1929, and the Manchurian Incident of 1931 occurred, so economic difficulties were　continuing in the twenties and thirties. The culture has also changed from Taisho Roman to Showa Modern and during this time the government should have become democratic based on modernization and liberalism from the passage of Taisho democracy, but it was leaning toward militarism. When you are watching the movie, you should think about how people lived in these turbulent times.

“The Wind Rises” is based on an actual story. It is not a fantasy movie which Studio Ghibli is good at making, so there are various highlights. First is the adult love and the kiss scenes. This is rare in the works of Ghibli. Second is the hero that is modeled after a real person, Jiro Horikoshi. The use of actual people has never been seen, so this is also a new challenge of Ghibli. Third is the sound. Ever since Hayao Miyazaki started using monaural recording from the movie “Nausicca of the Valley of the Wind,” he has been particular about sound, but this time the monaural recording was used to return to the origin. Moreover, surprisingly, sound effects like fighters and others are expressed by human voices.

In the work, Caproni often says the phrase "Do your best to live." This movie’s catch copy is "We must endeavor to live." In the twenties and thirties, world depression, the devastating earthquake, and distrust in politics have occurred. There are a lot of things in common in today’s society as well. These messages are containing the feelings which Hayao Miyazaki wants to tell to the people of our time.

「風立ちぬ」の舞台となっている時代の日本は、怒涛の時代を迎えていた。第一次世界大戦終戦後という経済状況の反動と、１９２３年に起きた関東大震災、２９年の世界恐慌、３１年の満州事変と２０～３０年代は経済的苦境が続いた。文化も大正ロマンから昭和モダンへ変化し、大正デモクラシーの流れから近代化と自由主義のもとの民主政治になるはずが、軍国主義へと傾いていくというのがこの時代だ。この激動の時代を人々がどう生きていたのか、その点も考えながら見てほしい。

ジブリ得意のファンタジーでなく、実際にあった時代が舞台の「風立ちぬ」では様々な見所がある。まず一つ目は大人の恋とキスシーンだ。これらはジブリ作品では珍しいポイントだ。二つ目は主人公は実在の人物堀越二郎をモデルにしていることだ。実在人物を使うことは今までしたことがなく、これもジブリの新たな試みである。三つ目は音響だ。「風の谷のナウシカ」の時モノラル録音を使って以来、音響にこだわり続けてきたが、原点に戻ろうと今回はモノラル録音を使用。さらに驚くことに戦闘機その他の効果音を人間の声で表現している。

作中カプローニが「力を尽くして生きなさい」というセリフが何度も出てくる。そして今作品のキャッチコピーの「生きねば」。世界的不況、大震災、政治の不信など２０～３０年代は現代と似ているところがある。これらのメッセージには宮崎駿の現代の人々に伝えたい気持ちが込められているのだろう。
