Do you know this phrase? This is from the opening phrase of the Psalm 27 in the Bible. It is written in Latin, meaning “The Lord is my light”. This is the motto of Oxford University, found on the University Arms.
Oxford University is the oldest university in England, founded in 12th century. It is ranked as the highest level university in the world. It introduces unique system, called “College”. There are 38 colleges, like Hertford College and Trinity College at Oxford University and all students and most academic staff must be a member of that. Each colleges is not specialized in all subjects but offer almost courses. Many students live in the dormitory which stands near each colleges.
The following states are about two aspects of Hertford College. The first one is its history and outline. Hertford College started to establish in 1282. The famous alumni, who graduated from this college are Jonathan Swift, satirist and author of Gulliver's Travels, Thomas Hobbes, political philosopher, and John Donne who is an English poet, satirist, and lawyer. It stands on the Catte Street, located in the center of Oxford and the main entrance is located at the opposite to the Bodleian Library, which is the set of the movie, Harry Potter. The famous sightseeing spot of Hertford College is the Bridge of Sighs (The picture is above the title.) and we can hear the beautiful chime from the Christ Church every day.
The second one is the difference between Oxford University (Oxford) students and Aoyama Gakuin University (AGU) students. Firstly, Oxford students usually have no part-time jobs in contrast to AGU students. Because they need to concentrate on their study as much as they can, and actually they have no time to work. As it mentioned above, since they live in dormitory near the college, so they study at library which opens 24 hours. Also similar to another European universities, Oxford’s new term begins on September, not on April. In addition to that, you can find other differences. It is the way of spending their free time after class and term-end tests. They usually get together at nearby pubs. There are many pubs like the Eagle and Child, King’s Arms opens at Oxford. So they can drink together and talk together till morning.
In conclusion, have you ever heard the word, YOLO? This word was told by many Oxford students at pubs. It means “You Only Live Once”, and that is, make good use of our life and enjoy to our heart’s content. So now you learnt a lot about Oxford, why don’t you visit and study there?
