Interview to Mr.Okubo

On October 5th, we interviewed Mr. Okubo,who used to work at an international institution and who is now successfully working internationally at a private enterprise. Literally, as the phrase “successfully working internationally” shows, Mr. Okubo rarely stays in Japan, since he travels on business around various parts of the world, like Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Western countries almost every week to negotiate international standards of insurance. Sometimes he attends the negotiation as a representative of Japanese or international institutions, so he uses three languages, English, French and Spanish.

We, A.G.University News, attended Mr. Okubo’s lecture and we asked Mr. Okubo some questions, mainly about the lectures and what we found uncertain.

Interviewers ；What an effective way can we speak English more fluently like the native American?

Mr.Okubo ；First, you sing Western music songs at karaoke. By singing, you speak English intonation directly, so that you can learn English rhythm naturally. And more to be able to sing English songs, you have to listen to that music, sing for real, to memorize the voice of natives and lyrics. These actions make you get used to English intonation and you can learn with joy.

Interviewers ；What is the thing Japanese people should be careful when they speak in front of foreigners?

Mr.Okubo　；The US and Japan have a different way of presentation. In the US, speakers begin with a main point of their stories during 5 to 10 minutes, have a chat in the middle of the stories, and finally state the conclusion again. In Japan, speakers begin with a chat without saying a main point, and as their stories go to the end, they state the conclusion. Why does the difference appear? This is because American and Japanese listeners have a different way of thinking. Japanese are not used to listening to a conclusion at first, so they take a long time to understand what speakers want to say. In the world, American presentation is usual. If you use Japanese presentation to foreigners, you will not be able to express your idea. Japanese should try to say their main points at first.

Interviewers ；Today, it is not special to be able to speak English as moving into globalization.What is the best way for students to learn English concretely? Tell us your idea.

Mr.Okubo ；The best way I propose to learn English is to use grammar of English thoughtfully.If you master that, you can talk what you want to. And remember, you have to learn all-round section of English, that is to say, don’t place a disproportionate emphasis on speaking, reading, or hearing. You had better keep on balance in studying English. For example, TOEIC test is a good way to study English. TOEIC needs your multi-level of your command of English.

Interviewers ；Is there a huge gap between Japan and the world in the movement of women into society?

Mr.Okubo ；When it comes to regular service, the great majority are men in Japan. However, on the other hand, women are in the majority in the world. Especially, as insurance offices are a type of business which are concerned with living, many women are employed. On the other hand, as stock firms and banks are risky, it`s been a male society. I suppose to change the way of thinking that men should be like this and women should be like this, and to change the social system like this.

Interviewers ；What do you want to do hereafter?

Mr.Okubo ；I’ve done most of the things I have wanted to do. My dream has mostly come true. So, from now on, I’m looking forward to giving high priority to the juniors, so as to reflect the opinion of Japan internationally. We must lay the foundation in order to correspond to whatever happens.

Interviwers ；What should you consider when you communicate with foreigners?

Mr.Okubo ；When I am in a conference, I try to make a comfortable situation by making jokes. However, there are four points that you have to be careful when you make jokes. Firstly, you must not say taboo words. Secondly, you should try not to say ill of other culture’s sense of values. Thirdly, try to understand about the person’s cultural background. Having knowledge of one’s cultural background helps us to have a smooth conversation. Lastly, keep neutrality. If you make fun of a country as a joke, you have to make fun of the rest of countries as well.

Interviewers ；How can shy people be able to work in public?

Mr.Okubo ；Studying foreign languages, except English is effective. We tend to get afraid of making mistakes when speaking English because it’s our second language. However, when it comes to a language that is completely new to us, we would not be afraid of making mistakes. Throughout this method, you would be able to speak out in public without hesitation. I also recommend shy people to venture to appear in public.

Interviewers ；How can we use English as an advantage?

Mr.Okubo ；First, you have to have a balanced English skill. Even if you can only be good at, for instance, reading but are not good at writing, you do not have a balanced English skill.Second, you have to use English logically. Using perfect English might be good, but what is more important than that is saying what you really want to say by basic English.

Interviewers ；On this topic, what should university students do during their campus life?

Mr.Okubo ；I recommend university students to hold debates. Having debates and speaking in public would improve the English speaking skill.

Conclusion

What we learned from Mr.Okubo was that the skill to communicate is one of the most important things to improve. He gave lots of advice that can be practically used. When there is a chance to communicate with foreigners, try to make jokes. He also said that for those who do not know what to do during campus life should do debates and try to speak in public. If you think you are shy, try to overcome by learning a new language besides English. By the way, Mr.Okubo uses Japanese English when he is in a situation surrounded by people from different backgrounds. The reason for this is that he wants to be neutral as a Japanese negotiator. Mr.Okubo thinks that if he uses Japanese English, he can show that he is not using other country’s English, and is in a fair position.

私たちは、10/５、土曜日に元国際機関の職員であり、今は民間企業で世界を舞台に活躍なされている大久保さんを取材しました。“世界を舞台に活躍している”、その言葉の通り、大久保さんは日本にはほぼ滞在せずアジア、アフリカ、中近東、欧米などさまざまなところに毎週のごとく出張して、保険に関する国際基準の協議をしています。また、時には日本や世界の企業を代表してネゴシエーションするため、英語とフランス語、スペイン語の３か国語を使って議論します。

今回は青山学院大学の留学生と国際政治経済学部のレネ教授、そして私たち英字新聞部の部員とで「世界で求められる英語力と英語に関するコミュニケーション」という大久保さんの授業を受けました。そして授業終わりに大久保さんに主に授業で話していたことや疑問に思ったことを取材しました。

取材者 ；ネイティブのように英語を流暢に話せるようになるにはどのような方法が効果的ですか。

大久保さん ；まず、カラオケで洋楽を歌うことです。歌うことで英語のイントネーションを直接発するので英語のリズム感を自然に身につけることができます。さらに洋楽を歌えるようになるには音楽を聴き、実際に歌いネイティブの声や歌詞を覚えますよね。これらの行為により、あなたはイントネーションに慣れ、楽しみながら学ぶことができます。

取材者 ；日本人が外国人の前で話をする時気をつけるべきことはなんですか。

大久保さん ；アメリカと日本ではプレゼンテーションの方法が違います。アメリカでは、話し手は5～10分の間に重要なポイントを話し、途中で雑談をし、最後にもう一度結論を述べます。日本では、話し手は重要なポイントを話すことなく雑談を始め、話が終わりに向かうにつれて結論を述べます。なぜこのような違いが表れるのでしょうか。それはアメリカ人と日本人の物の考え方が違うからです。日本人は最初に結論を聞くことに慣れていないため、話し手が言いたいことを理解するのに時間がかかります。世界ではアメリカ式のプレゼンテーションが一般的です。日本式のプレゼンテーションでは言いたいことが伝わりません。日本人は外国人に対して最初に重要なポイントを話すことを心がけるべきでしょう。

取材者； 今日グローバル化が進むにつれて英語が話せることは特別な時代ではなくなりました。では、大久保さんが提案する学生が英語力を伸ばすための具体的な方法を教えてください。

大久保さん ；英語学習をする上で私が提案するベストな方法は、英文法を使いこなすことです。もしマスターすれば、あなた方が話したいことを話すことができます。そして忘れてはならないことが、総合的に英語を学ぶことです。それはつまりスピーキング、リーディング、もしくはヒアリングだけに偏らずに万遍なく学ぶということです。英語を学ぶときはバランスを重視した方が良いってことですね。例えばTOEICは英語を勉強するためにはもってこいのテストですよ。TOEICは自分の英語力を総合的に図ることができるので。

取材者 ；これまでどのようなキャリヤを歩み、どのような活動を行って来ましたか？

大久保さん ；初めは日本生命に勤めていました。グローバルに活躍したいと考えていたので、就職先を決める際、グローバル化に熱心でお金はあるが、グローバル化できていない会社を探しており、このすべての条件を満たしていたのがこの会社でした。しかし入社後５年間英語は全く使う機会がありませんでした。私はマンハッタンで働くことが夢だったのですが、当時私は英語が全く話せず、かつ世の中母国語とともに英語を話せる人は沢山いました。つまり当たり前のことだったのです。そこで、英語以外の言語を習得する決心をし、仏語を選び、フランス留学をし、現地のビズネススクールへ通いました。ここでの学びのおかげでＥＵとの関わりが増えました。留学によって自信をつけ、更に当時景気が悪くなりパリから念願のNY、マンハッタンへ異動することになり、パンフレットを作成する会社に勤めました。多言語を話せ、ドメスティックをより知っていたことで今回は活躍することができました。なぜならアメリカは投資しか知らず、ドメスティックについては誰も知らなかったからです。大雑把にいうと、私は日本生命を2002～2006年まで勤めた後に、ＢＩＳという国際公務員の仕事に務め、５年間世界経済に携わりました。

取材者 ；海外の人と共に仕事をする難しさはどんな点にありますか？

大久保さん ；たくさんあるが、やはり文化の違いかな。相手の立場を理解することが非常に重要です。そのためには、仕事に取り掛かる前に相手国の事情を細かに調べることが必要です。さらに、キーパーソンと話す際には、腹を割って会議に挑み、相手から信頼を得ることが重要です。

取材者 ；日本と世界の女性の社会進出は大きく異なりますか？

大久保さん ；日本では一般職となると男性が大半を占めています。ところが、世界では半分以上が女性です。特に、保険会社は生活に関わる業種であるということもあり、女性が多く勤めています。その一方、証券会社や銀行はリスクが高いため、男性社会となっています。私は、男性はこうあるべき、女性はこうあるべきであるという考え方、そしてこのような社会システムを変えたいと思っています。

取材者 ；今後やりたいことはなんですか？

大久保さん ；やりたいことはほぼやってきちゃいましたね（笑）夢もほとんど叶ったし…なのでこれからは、日本の意見を国際的に反映させることが出来るように、後輩を育てることに力をいれようと思います。どんなことが起きても対応できるように、布石を打つんです。
