Art in Yokohama: Triennale 2014 From August

With its beautiful view of the waterfront, mix of old and new cityscapes, and coexistence of diverse cultures, Yokohama has attracted a number of people since its opening of the port 155 years ago. This summer, unique arts of modern times assemble in this creative city from all over the world. Held only once every three years, the festival of contemporary art is called “Yokohama Triennale." Since the first exhibition in 2001, each triennale has been given different themes. In this year, the fifth edition starts from August 1st under the title of “ART Fahrenheit 451: Sailing into the sea of oblivion”. There will be works by both foreign and Japanese artists of any age, young to dead, and any fields of creativity, paintings to poems. An array of out-of-the-box ideas is ready to stun you.

The contemporary art is likely to get misunderstood by people: it's difficult. It would be very hard to know what the creator wants to convey. However, there is no need to understand them completely. It is up to you how to interpret. The works sometimes could be very inspiring and intriguing, but also offensive and outrageous, or maybe perplexing but plausible. Modern arts enable us to see the world from another point of view. The Yokohama Triennale 2014 will give you chances to immerse yourself in the world of the extraordinary perspective.

The art director of this big event is Yasumasa Morimura. He is a contemporary artist who uses photographs to make his self-portrait impersonating famous portraits, film stars, and iconic figures from the 20th century.

The theme “ART Fahrenheit 451: Sailing into the Sea of oblivion” is taken out from a novel “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury. The novel is a classic SF novel telling a story of the time which is autocratic and books are banned to read. The temperature, Fahrenheit 451, let a book set on fire naturally.

In the history, humans achieved remarkable success in various fields, but there were always neglected and forgotten people's efforts behind these achievements. In the art world, the same thing happens. Every era, some artists come out to a front stage with a spotlight and leave their name, while many other artists remain behind their shadows. This year's title follows the intention to focus on the people and the art expressions fallen into "the sea of oblivion" which do not have a chance to be seen by the outside world.

The exhibitions are displayed in two introductions and 11 chapters with names. Starting from Yokohama Musuem of Arts, you can explore in order of chapters and will get to the final chapter in Shinko Pier. The first thing to be seen in the entrance of the Museum is Introduction: "Unmonumental Monuments" featuring an enormous sculpture and a huge garbage bin for discarded art works. The expression forms include video installation, slide show, collage*, and bricolage**: all of the works are unpredictable.

For three months, the festival will be open. Not only in Yokohama Art Museum and Shinko Pier Exhibition Hall, the neighbors of Minatomirai area like BankART Studio and Kogane-chou also join to expand this distinctive art experience. Bring your friends, colleagues, family, to encounter with lost objects and moments to notice and reconsider what is really important.

　美しい風景や異文化の共存を持つ横浜は、その開港以来たくさんの人々に愛されてきた。この夏、世界中の現代芸術がこの創造的な都市に集う。3年に1度開催される現代アートの祭典は、「横浜トリエンナーレ」と呼ばれる。2001年の初回以来、各トリエンナーレに、それぞれテーマが用意されてきた。今年の8月1日から始まる第５回のテーマは、「華氏451の芸術：世界の中心には忘却の海がある」だ。あらゆる年齢の外国人と日本人アーティスの作品が様々な創造のフィールドからやってくる。独自のアイデアの数々があなたを驚かすことは間違いないでしょう。

　現代アートは人々に誤解されがちです。難しいと。作者が伝えたいものを知ることは非常に難しい。しかし、それらを完全に理解する必要はないのだ。それをどのように解釈するかはあなた次第です。作品は、時には非常に刺激的で魅力的なだけでなく、攻撃的かつとんでもない、または当惑的で、もっともらしいかもしれない。現代アートは、別の観点から世界を見るために私達を助けてくれる。横浜トリエンナーレ2014では、非日常的な視点の世界に浸ることが出きる。

　この一大イベントのアートディレクターは、森村泰昌だ。彼は有名な肖像画、映画スター、20世紀からの著名人に扮した自分の姿を写真に納めて作品をつくる現代美術家である。「華氏451の芸術：世界の中心には忘却の海がある」のタイトルは、レイ·ブラッドベリによる小説「華氏451」が引用されている。これは、独裁体制の中、読書が禁止されている世界を描写した古典的なSF小説である。華氏451度とは、本が自然に発火する温度である​​。

　歴史の中で、人間はたくさんの分野で偉大な成功を達成してきたが、これらの成果の背後には常に無視され、忘れられた人々の努力があった。アートの世界でも、同じことが起こる。どの時代にも、いくつかのアーティストが表舞台に出てくる中、多くのアーティストがその影の後ろに残っている。今年のトリエンナーレは、外の世界に出てくることがなく、 "忘却の海"に漂う人々とアートに焦点をあてている。

展覧会は、名前の2つの序章と11の章で構成されている。横浜美術館からはじまり、各章の順に巡り、新港ピアで最終章をたどり着く。美術館入り口の空間は「アンモニュメンタルなモニュメント」と題され、巨大な彫刻や失敗した芸術作品のための巨大なゴミ箱が置かれる。表現方法は、ビデオインスタレーション、スライドショー、コラージュ、およびブリコラージュなどありとあらゆるものが揃う。

　3ヶ月間開催されるトリエンナーレには、横浜美術館、新港ピア展示場だけでなく、BANKART Studioと黄金町のようなみなとみらい周辺の地区も参加する。この祭典が、本当に重要なものが何かを考え直す絶好の機会になるはずである。
