English as a tool to know other people
ãããA Sophia Universityâs professor, Kensaku Yosida, indicated that for a lack of motivation to study English, Japanese people cannot speak in English well. It seems difficult to find motivation to study English, but if you can speak English, you can get chances to understand foreign people. It would be able to result in eliminating your bias against them. Do you want to be a person who doesn't have it?
Probably, only few people want to have the bias, but we have been unconsciously given it. Japanese people tend to have national bias. For example, American people are easygoing or Englishmen are âgentlemen.â These are quintessential biases, which dangerously make us have unconscious first impressions towards them. In other words, we have the possibility to oversimplify
them by the bias and to stop thinking further about them.Learning English is likely to be prescriptions to fight against the bias, and to know your foreign friends correctly.
One of the English pros is that people all over the world learn this language as a second language or foreign language. Among people âall over the world,â there are people whose countries have conflicts with Japan. It is difficult for us to know reality of the people from those countries, because we tend to have national stereotypes by watching their country's dramas and the Internet sites, like â2-channel.â This big board in the Internet often work as a device which leads Japanese people to dislike the other countries, but those who look at the board and judge them have neither heard the peopleâs voices nor understand the people themselves. To understand the countries we must build a bridge named English to understand each other. Frankly speaking, it is a waste of time to misunderstand them by badly exaggerated information and dislike them, because it just causes stirs, and we must get into deep water in the way. A key-point to get out of the water is that first of all, we realize that we have bad prejudice against them and misunderstand them. In addition, we must communicate with people in the countries, try to know them and deconstruct exaggerated myth. In this process, English is so useful that it can bridge a linguistic gap between us and them.
As we have stereotypes towards foreign people, they would also have bias against us. In terms of characteristics, Japanese people are said to be shy and introverted, but these are just oversimplified images. Speaking of English helps you tell your foreign friends about you correctly, which develops a relationship with them . Additionally, It is not until you face the bias or prejudice against you that you would realize that they annoy you, and you should be careful for them.
Summarizing them, bias, stereotypes and prejudice of oversimplified nationality result from lacks of communication between us and foreign people. Learning English would be a medicine to overcome this problem. The problem is not only the motivation but also your life-time conundrum. Lastly, if you get tired of learning English now, you should remember that after studying English, you will be able to get chances to know people who have different background from us.
